Aprons Aprons Aprons

It doesn’t matter if you are a great cook or a not so great cook.  It doesn’t matter if you are cooking the entire dinner or ordering in from Whole Foods or Stop n Shop and it certainly doesn’t matter if your contribution is dessert or the entire banquet…everyone should look great during the holiday season.

These aprons have been beautifully made by the very clever Australian artist, Karenne Crow.  Karenne resides in the beautiful Hunter Valley and created these and many more to sell so that she can cover her addiction to Costco Ribbons and Nashville Wrap cards.

Her use of antique laces and linens, together with lovely crisp and colorful fabrics, ensures each and every one of these aprons are unique.  Many of the antique laces are heirlooms from her Aunts and her own grandmother.

Delicious Differences

DSC_0290

Among the mind’s powers is one that comes of itself to many children and artists. It need not be lost, to the end of his days, by anyone who has ever had it. This is the power of taking delight in a thing, or rather in anything, everything, not as a means to some other end, but just because it is what it is, and the lover dotes on whatever may be the traits of the beloved object. A child in the full health of his mind will put his hand flat on the summer turf, feel it, and give a little shiver of private glee at the elastic firmness of the globe. He is not thinking how well it will do for some game or to feed sheep upon. That would be the way of the wooer whose mind runs on his mistress’s money. The child’s is sheer affection, the true ecstatic sense of the thing’s inherent characteristics. No matter what the things may be, no matter what they are good or no good for, there they are, each with a thrilling unique look and feel of its own, like a face; the iron astringently cool under its paint, the painted wood familiarly warmer, the clod crumbling enchantingly down in the hands, with its little dry smell of the sun and of hot nettles; each common thing a personality marked by delicious differences.

How thrilled we were to hear that Somerset Studio Magazine is making a call for artwork in the theme of Alice in Wonderland. Artwork is due October 15....how convenient! Discover for yourself why all our artists keep coming back every year.

Art Is...in the Community

Hot on the heels of our successful 2007 Let It All Hang Out for Breast Cancer for the Breast Form Fund and our 2008 doll drive for The Children's Home, we are branching out and sharing our art in various places.  We would so love you to join us at any of this opportunities:

Abigail House is the new house for girls at The Children's Home and is designed to support treatment programs, enabling the girls to expand & discover life skills while  benefiting from specialized areas such as spa, comfort and group therapy rooms.

In conjunction with the special screening of "Who Does She Think She Is", artists may submit a piece of artwork for a unique exhibition and fundraiser where 20% of the artwork sales will go to Abigail House and programs.  For more information and to participate in this unique exhibition contact us. Screening: Friday, October 9 - Open to the public

From this…..to this…..

Memory Boxes for  CHAM - Many of the Art Is...You family, have watched this little boy grow and blossom.  His health today is largely due to the commitment of the staff at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore, NY, Bronx.

We have been asked if we could make some memory boxes for families who's child passes away.

In partnership with Flatwoods Folkart, we are thrilled to be able to take on this project and aim to deliver a minimum of 50 boxes. Please register your interest with us today, and we will send you full details of how you can decorate a memory box and give a family something special to hold on to.

Wartburg Adult Care Community is a facility located in Mt Vernon, New York.  They have asked our Art Is...You family and friends to consider visiting and running some workshops throughout the year. This is a recent request and details are yet to be finalized. We would love to hear from our friends - offers of ideas, your time or supplies would all be wonderful.

Update will be provided in our August E-News

A note from Ellen and Sallianne

The philosophy of Art Is...You is, to create a moment in time where artists, whether they be faculty or students, can come together to share in their passion for creativity. In the last two years words of joy and, tears of happiness have been shared . Friendships have been forged and we have witnessed lives changing.  Our mission - to make this event as accessible as it can be to as many people as possible. No matter where an artist is, in their life, they are able to escape for a few hours, a day or an entire weekend.

In the words of one of our alumni:
I learned new media, new techniques, discovered new places in myself. I felt confident, self-assured. This never happens to me!

Please join us.

Once Upon a Time...

Those of you that read my column in Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine read about my fear and trepidations when first asked to teach at an art retreat. I had serious doubts that I knew enough about art or was talented enough to teach anyone anything about making art.

But most of all, I was afraid that I would not have what it takes to be the kind of teacher that lights a fire in her students and gets their creative juices going. I learned so much about teaching art that weekend and the most important thing I learned was that students come to art retreats with all that inspiration inside them.

A good teacher is just there to impart some skills, teach a few techniques, and provide a format in which the student can take the time and space to draw their art out. In short, I learned that we all have our red balloons and given a chance, our red balloons will appear as if by magic.

I have had the honor of being asked back to teach this fall at Art Is, along with a roster of talented and amazing teachers. I am sure the magic will be back!
Please come and join us at one of the few northeast art retreats featuring nationally known teachers at a reasonable price in a very pretty, comfortable hotel in the country in Connecticut.
