Kecia’s Winged Love

Kecia Deveney came into our lives four years ago when vending at Art is…You with the most spectacular booth of jewelry and assorted items and from that moment she has become one of our most loyal, and popular  teachers.

Kecia

Kecia creates for her students an unforgettable experience and  they  always walk out exclaiming…I MADE THIS! This is Beverley with her finished piece from Kecia’s Class – it is one our most favorite images from Art is…You.

So yesterday we gathered at the Homestead for the last workshop in the 2011 Art in the Garden Summer Series.

image

Another magic day under the trees where we were all so focused on collage, glitter, chain and resin…I mean really is there anything better than that?

IMG_7924

Delightful and personalized hand created kits which felt like gifts, were at each person’s station and from those kits with a little help from our imagination, our memories of past experiences, and from our desire to encapsulate a message or moment that had meaning to us…we created our wings of love…

IMG_7925

Each of our Wings of Love had its own magic, color and sparkle. Once the resin dries (24 hours and no poking it) we have chains, charms and doodads to add.

“shhhh there is an angel beside me”  - featuring Sallianne (who is not picking her nose) and her angelic sister Hayley – Christmas 1970.

Once again time stood still only to awaken when we exhaled and exclaimed … I MADE THIS!

Garden Grove, California

The Jersey Shore

Necessary Job:  Caregiver for my son, Tucker

How long have you been doing art?
Since high school

At what age did you begin creating and why?
I started making little fleecing sheep Christmas ornaments out of this fleece scrap my mom was using and people wanted t buy them. i did it for fun!

What is your favorite part of teaching?
Sharing my methods and watching their art come alive

What do you find most challenging about teaching?
It can be time consuming; all the preparation, supplies, packing- worrying if i forgot something important, etc.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
If it is warm i like to be outside going to flea markets

What is your favorite type of art medium?
I love it all; painting, collage, jewelry, sewing, sculpting dolls

Who is your favorite artist? i really love Anahata Katkin

What is one interesting (trivial) fact that everyone should know about you?
I've driven across the U.S. 4 times, twice by myself!

Attach your favorite image and detail why it is your favorite.

This is a picture  of a poster i bought  about 10 years ago.  I have a fascination with cemetery angels and after seeing the image online in a story, I had to find it. She is an angel in a cemetery in Paris (if i am remembering correctly). I  think she is a beautiful piece of art.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Paints

I have been to many art retreats before, but never have I grown so close to so many of the other people BEFORE I even got there. This will be like "Old Home Week". You are all so wonderful, friendly, sharing, and FUN people...........Ellen and Sallianne, you have assembled a grand group of teachers, classes, vendors and activities. I can't wait to meet the "Aussie Mum", to do journaling with Loretta, to bead with Annie, to learn from Lillian, to gift you all with my trades, to shop till I drop at vendor's booths, and to give big ole hugs to all of my new BFF's.....(Sue, CA)

Art Is...
The smoosh of a rubber stamp on crisp paper;
The whirr of the sewing machine piecing a block;
The clatter of beads being threaded on a needle;
The snip of a wire cutter attaching a clasp to a bracelet;
The tap of the painter's brush mixing the perfect sunset red;
The prick of a needle piercing layers of fabric;
The rip of watercolor paper being torn into signatures;
The squish of acrylics leaving a tube;
The hum of activity in a room full of dollmakers;
The giggles of artists making tiaras;
The greetings of artists not seen since last year;
The applause of generous artists at Show 'N Tell;
The sounds of lives changing;
The words of joy, the tears of happiness,
The bonds of friendship forged through art.
These things and more, are all what Art Is.
Art is waiting for you.

Art Is…Apron Inspiration

Today I took advantage of the warm day to run outside and photograph these wonderful aprons.  These are just a few of the 35 plus that my mum has been creating over the past weeks to bring to Art Is…You.

 IMG_1251 IMG_1252 IMG_1253 IMG_1254 IMG_1255 IMG_1256 IMG_1257 IMG_1258 IMG_1259IMG_1260

Mum has used beautiful fabrics to create some wonderful pieces.  Each one has been embellished with vintage laces, guest linens and even lacey tablecloths.  She even made me and the Goddess matching ones for our the Coronation of Alice – a night when over 80 artists will gather to create their own Tea Party Hats.  With her inspiration, everyone will be wearing an apron (check out Kecia’s) and they have a chance to purchase one of these lovelies…because somehow Mum has to fund the Costco ribbon addiction that she has!!

BRING IT ON!!

Taryn Reece and Kecia Deveney

We're painting the roses red with Taryn Reece...

Taryn Reece has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford. Taryn enjoys working with many different types of media as the mood or muse strikes her. Her watercolor and pen & ink work have appeared in many commercially-licensed designs, as well as privately commissioned pieces. Taryn has been featured in several articles in Somerset Studios and Somerset Memories.

Taryn and her husband Scott live on Windy Hill Farm in Maine. As much as she is constantly amazed and inspired by Mother Nature, Taryn has to admit she also has a fascination with the creations of man. Junky antiques, rusted metal pieces, old doll parts, antique glass glitter, teeny tiny miniatures, found objects and absolutely any type of paper ephemera…these things make her heart flutter! Scott and Taryn founded NavelJelly Studios, a mixed media & alternative art supply company with the mission to provide like-minded souls with quality-made products. Their studio specializes in providing original designs, weird & wonderful found objects, as well as all things miniature. Taryn and Scott have supported Art Is…You since its first year. Art is ... following Kecia Deveney down the rabbit hole...

Originally from California, Kecia is a mixed media/jewelry artist/photographer, who now resides in New Jersey. Drawing inspiration from her life experience as the mother of a severely disabled child, Kecia has channeled that energy into learning and creating art. She's been known to go to a flea market on the hottest days in the summer or 17 degrees in the winter to see what she can find to play with. Experimenting with "reclaimed discardia" results in many unique pieces of storytelling art. She's recently been published in Altered Couture and has several other pieces of jewelry in the submission process. Her goal as a teacher is to support, motivate and inspire others. You can read more about her artistic journey at http://lemoncholys.blogspot.com/ and http://www.lemoncholys.com/
